About us
Mount Desert Island was a favorite spot for 19th Century 'Rusticators' from Boston, NY, and Philadelphia to visit and escape their city life to experience untouched nature. Many well-respected artists and illustrators would also come to capture the scenes for such publications as Harper's, Gleason's and Picturesque America. Thomas Cole and Frederic Edwin Church, representing the Hudson River School of Art, were especially taken by the Island's beauty as can be seen in many of their works. The following is a collection of hand colored wood and steel engravings from the 1870s. All are matted with acid free off whites matting and ready to be framed.
